Where to book the best affordable accommodation for the Hay Festival this summer; here's our selection of great holiday cottages, yurts and b&bs in the area

Hay Festival: accommodation booking guide

B&bs get snapped up fast. The new Westbrook Court, four miles from Hay, still has availability; a three-night stay (festival minimum) in one of its five sleek suites – each with a private lounge and suntrap terrace – costs from £450 (01497 831752; westbrookcourtbandb.co.uk).

The fresh, modern and eco-minded Westview Guesthouse has limited space; it’s only three miles from Hay and has secure bike storage, so you could cycle in; doubles cost from £80 per night (01497 842935; westviewguesthouse.com).

The Felin Fach Griffin, a country pub with excellent food and cosy rooms, is 12 miles from Hay; helpfully, the 39B bus links the two in 30 minutes. Doubles cost from £125 per night; book via i-escape.com to get a free bottle of sparkling wine (0117 946 7072; i-escape.com/the-felin-fach-griffin).

If all else fails, the festival runs a bed-finder service, which costs £10 per booking (plus accommodation costs); it provides accommodation information, including listings of locals offering rooms in their homes during the festival. See hayfestival.com
